Using Shorthand Notation

TEI is a very expressive way of annotating many different things in a manuscript. As such, it can also become quite difficult to use, given that there are so many option. For people annotating manuscript in an archive, it can therefore be much easier to use a shorthand notation: the kind of notation that has traditionally been used for annotating manuscripts before the introduction of XML. In that case, the first draft of the transcription can be made in shorthand notation, and upon completion, the shorthand is turned into full XML before further processing (tokenization).

Since the frequent marking will differ from one project to the next, it is possible to define the shorthand you want to use. The default shorthand is given below:

{<#>} Expansion $1 {{#}} Difficult reading $1 {(#)} Deleted by author $1
